Team Spotlight: Russell Sprouts

13 May 2019 by Jodie Wilson

Did you know RLWSC has a team in Football Canterbury’s Grace Martin Trophy Competition?

The Grace Martin Trophy (GMT) is the premier women’s competition in our association and in 2019 is made up of the 6 best women’s all age teams. The competition is played over four rounds (20 games) plus finals. RLWSC GMT team is made up of players ranging in age from 21 to 38 many of whom played for RLWSC as juniors in the late 90s (Ceara Chase, Mary Britton, Frances Christodolou, Gabriella Poletto, Brigette Poletto and Cat Johnson) and others who have played for the club for the past 10 years.

The team is affectionately known as the Russell Sprouts but unlike the vegetable is a popular team around the parks due to the number of seasons they have been in action and their competitiveness and fairness on the field.

The 2019 season got off to a rocky start for the Sprouts with the team finishing round 1 with 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses placing them in fourth spot on the ladder.

Round 2 is set to heat up after the Sprouts beat the undefeated Hurlstone Park Wanderers (HPW) at QEP on Sunday.

Armed with a new coach and a new formation the Sprouts held HPW to 0-0 at halftime and just when it looked like the game would end in another draw we broke through the defense to put one in the back of the net. New recruit Amy Harris securing us the winning goal remaining cool under pressure in a 1:1 with the goalie.

If you would like to catch a glimpse of the Sprouts in action check the iCompman Draw for upcoming games including a night game on Thursday 30th May at Callen Park @ 7pm.

I know the team would appreciate the support.
